How to import your 1Password vault

Moving from 1Password to Hey Be Safe takes a few minutes. The process is one-way — Hey Be Safe never asks for your 1Password master password, and the export file never leaves your browser unencrypted.

1. Export your data from 1Password

1. Open the 1Password desktop app and sign in.
2. Choose File → Export → All Items.
3. Pick the vault you want to move (or All Vaults for a single export).
4. Choose Comma Separated Values (.csv) as the format. Save the file somewhere you can find it again — for example, your Desktop.

If you have several vaults you want to keep separate, repeat the export once per vault. Each CSV becomes one import in Hey Be Safe.

2. Open the Hey Be Safe import wizard

1. Sign in at heybesafe.com/safe/.
2. Open the menu and choose Import.
3. Select 1Password (CSV) from the list.

3. Upload your file

Drag the CSV onto the upload area or click to browse. Hey Be Safe parses the file in your browser — the contents are never sent to our servers in plaintext. You’ll see a preview of every item the importer recognised.

Review the preview before continuing:

• Logins map to standard password entries.
• Secure Notes map to notes.
• Credit Cards and Identities map to their own item types.
• Anything the importer can’t categorise lands in a “needs review” group at the bottom.

4. Confirm the import

Click Import N items. The wizard encrypts each item with your safe password locally, then syncs the encrypted bundle. When the progress bar finishes, your imported items appear alongside anything that was already there.

5. Clean up the export file

The 1Password CSV contains every secret in plaintext. As soon as the import is verified:

• Empty your Trash / Recycle Bin so the file isn’t recoverable.
• On macOS, you can use File → Move to Trash → Secure Empty Trash (or srm from a terminal) for extra paranoia.

Once you’re sure the import looks right in Hey Be Safe, you can cancel your 1Password subscription whenever you’re ready.

Troubleshooting

• “The file doesn’t look like a 1Password export.” 1Password’s newer apps default to .1pux (an encrypted bundle) which we can’t read. Re-export as CSV.
• A few items are missing. 1Password’s CSV export drops attachments and shared-vault metadata. The credentials themselves come across — but any file attachments must be moved manually.
• TOTP secrets didn’t import. If your 1Password entry stored a one-time-password seed, copy the otpauth:// URI from 1Password and paste it into the matching Hey Be Safe item’s TOTP field.
